What do I / We do on Facebook? Part 1 - Socializing

Sitting in front of the laptop today evening, awaiting my CAT(Common Aptitude Test) exam in 2 days... which will decide if I will get admissions into one of the best Management Institutes in India; I should be studying for the exam in such a way that this is the last thing for me to survive...
But... there I was sitting in front of the laptop and surfing the internet for Facebook!
Thats when it struck me to just think about what am I actually doing on Facebook, that it has become such an integral part of my life nowadays. So there goes my Analysis ( thats what I call it for now... let me know if you have a better name for it) :
So what do I goto Facebook for?
1. Socializing : Getting updates from friends; some who are sitting just 3 desks away in office; some who are sitting 3 buildings away in some other company; some who are sitting 3 kilometers away in another area; some who are sitting 3 hours away in another city; some who are sitting 3 years away, who I have not met since college; some who are sitting 3 institutions away, my school friends who I can just be in contact through such social networking sites! Other than this I have many other species.. like cousins, relatives in different cities and countries, friends I have made while playing games on Facebook(we will talk about this later in another section).. and some more which I cant think of now!!
So why are we so eager to read updates of these friends? Well, to know what they are doing in their lives, to know what they are feeling, to know what they are all joking about, to know whatever they want us to know about them.
So what are we gaining out of it? Well staying in touch is very important if you need to continue relationships with someone for a long time.
Once my professor in college said something about revision of what you studied in the day. If you dont revise what you studied in the day, next morning you forget 50% of it. if you dont revise the next day too, you again forget 50% of the remaining stuff... so totally you have forgotten 75% of the stuff. Similarly, if you dont stay in touch with the people, you tend to forget them day by day and one day will arrive when you actually will need a real strong memory punch to remember even their name!!!
It is a nice method to involve a group of people commenting on the same thing - a post--which can be a quote, a joke(something like a Rajnikanth one which is very popular nowadays), an incident, a feeling, some news, movie trailor, a video... anything!!! You just put it up and people start commenting, making fun, giving their own opinion, and the creativity can range from one end of the rainbow to another(just because we dont know where the rainbow starts and where it ends). Thats what helps you increase your database of these thoughts, these ways of thoughts, what is their origin and in what all directions can it go, you will link them with other conversations you have with completely different people who never even knew of such a thing!
What else?? ... umm..... yeah people want to go and see the profile of the person whom they have a crush on... try to contact them through Facebook.. chat with them... comment on their posts and pictures.. like them with a thumb up in front of their name.. and so on. thats one reason too.
We try to add groups and communities that we are engaged with... colleges, schools, companies/organizations, interests, role models, etc ... etc. We get constant updates about their activities, tips and tricks, events coming up, alumni and members.... lots of it!! Try to get the goals, mission, vision clearer for these groups and then help towards their contribution!
